Grand Theft Auto 6 launches on Thursday, November 19, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. One question keeps coming up in the last stretch before launch: is the boxed copy worth it, or should you just buy digital? The short answer is that for most people in the US it makes no price difference, so the decision comes down to three small things. Answer the questions below in order and stop at the first “yes”.
If you answered “no” to everything, go digital: same price, no delivery risk and, on PlayStation, a free month of GTA+ with a digital purchase made by November 19.
There is no disc. The retail GTA 6 box contains a download code, so both versions install the same way and need the same free space, up to 212 GB. That also means a boxed copy cannot be resold once the code is used, which removes the usual reason to buy physical. HUDWire’s full comparison, with the price table and the GTA+ terms, is here: GTA 6 digital vs physical.
| Digital | Boxed (code in box) | |
|---|---|---|
| US price | $79.99 Standard, $99.99 Ultimate | $79.99 Standard only |
| Preload | From November 10 | After redeeming the code, boxes from November 12 |
| Disc | No | No, a code only |
| Free GTA+ month | Yes, with a digital purchase | No |
| Resale | No | No, once the code is redeemed |
| Stock risk | None | Some stores reported sellouts |
Whichever you pick, the week ahead is busy: Xbox preload on the evening of November 9 in the Americas, PS5 preload on November 10, boxed codes on November 12 and the launch on November 19. HUDWire keeps a dated calendar of every step in its GTA 6 launch week guide, and the reported 55-trophy list is covered in GTA 6 trophies and achievements.
